Snapchat is quietly testing a feature that’s turning private chats into miniature musicals. Called “Chat to Song,” it lets users pick a music genre and instantly transform the text of a DM into a short, AI‑generated song that can be sent back into the conversation. The lyrics are literally whatever you just typed, re-packaged as a hooky melody.

The tool formalizes a TikTok meme that had people manually turning texts into songs; now the platform itself is doing the production work. Among Gen Z users in North America and Europe, it’s shifting the tone of messaging from “reply with an emoji” to “reply with a track.” Friends are turning arguments, inside jokes and even breakup debriefs into songs, using humor and musical drama to soften topics that might otherwise feel heavy.

The trend raises obvious questions around privacy and ownership: where do those AI‑made vocals live, and who controls them? Snapchat notes that Chat to Song is still in testing and not available in every chat or for every account, but creators and marketers are already imagining duet chains, crowdsourced lyrics and branded “theme songs” for group chats.
