When Chatbots Become Malls: Gen Z Starts Treating AI as a New Shopping Channel
A new survey covered by a U.S. retail trade outlet on September 24 suggests that more shoppers, especially younger ones, are no longer treating generative AI as just a search tool. Instead, they are starting to see chatbots and AI assistants as a distinct shopping channel in their own right. The research, conducted by marketing and sales-support firm Acosta Group, shows Gen Z and younger millennials using AI to handle product research, summarize reviews, hunt for deals, and even suggest recipes tied to items in their carts. In practice, many are “asking AI first” before opening Amazon or a traditional e‑commerce app.
That doesn’t mean they fully trust AI to buy on their behalf. Only a little over one-fifth of respondents who already use generative AI for shopping said they would be comfortable letting an agent make actual purchase decisions for them, reflecting ongoing anxiety about data use, hidden advertising bias, and lack of transparency. At the same time, retailers are paying attention to where attention is shifting. The report frames AI as a potential “fourth storefront” after physical stores, websites, and mobile apps. Brands are beginning to experiment with AI‑ready product descriptions, packaging that surfaces well in AI summaries, and exclusive discounts unlocked through chat interfaces. While similar large-scale surveys have yet to appear in Japan, the findings hint at how quickly everyday shopping habits could reorganize around AI once consumers start to view it as a place to shop—not just a place to ask questions.
