Inside Alibaba’s Qwen Glasses: The Ultralow‑Power AI Chip That Makes Them Possible
Himax Technologies has announced that its ultralow‑power AI platform “WiseEye” will power Alibaba’s upcoming Qwen smart glasses. Qwen is the company’s in‑house AI brand, and the glasses are positioned as AI‑first wearable devices rather than just another pair of Bluetooth audio frames.
WiseEye is a tiny always‑on vision and sensing chip designed to run AI models directly on the device with minimal power and heat. Instead of streaming all camera or sensor data to the cloud, the chip performs local inference and filtering, only sending what’s actually useful. That approach reduces latency and data usage while also improving privacy, since less raw footage ever leaves the glasses.
Himax notes that WiseEye has already been adopted in other smart‑glasses projects, and sees Qwen Glasses as further validation that the next wave of wearables will depend on ultralow‑power on‑device AI. For users, the big question is whether this kind of silicon can finally crack two long‑standing problems in smart eyewear: battery life and comfort. The first real‑world demos of Qwen Glasses will be watched closely by both developers and early adopters.
