Apple’s New Home Collection: A Full-Stack Push into the Smart Home
On October 13, Apple quietly but decisively moved deeper into the smart home with a new hardware family called Apple Home Collection. The lineup spans all the core categories consumers expect today: smart locks, thermostats, video doorbells, indoor and outdoor security cameras, and floodlight-style outdoor fixtures. Although each device is sold under partner brands like LG and Schneider Electric, the overall design language and user experience are clearly driven by Apple, and everything is managed through the Apple Home app and the new HomeView smart display.
Until now, Apple mostly relied on third‑party HomeKit accessories. With Home Collection, it is effectively publishing its own "default bundle" of gear that shows how an Apple-centric smart home should look. Setup is designed to be as close to plug‑and‑play as possible, using NFC tap‑to‑pair with an iPhone and supporting the Matter interoperability standard for easier mixing of brands. A highlight is LG’s smart deadbolt, which uses Ultra Wideband proximity detection to unlock automatically as you approach the door. Local control remains available even without an internet connection, addressing long‑standing concerns about security and latency.
Each device can be purchased a la carte, but Apple and its partners will also sell starter packs that bundle several accessories together. International tech media see the move as Apple’s clearest signal yet that it wants to own not just the smartphone in your pocket but the entire connected-home stack on your walls and doors.
