Gemini for Mac is About to Live Inside Your Messages App

Google’s Gemini desktop app for macOS is quietly turning into something much more powerful: an AI that can live directly inside Apple’s Messages app. According to recent reports, the next Gemini for Mac update will add the ability to read and send iMessages locally, as long as users explicitly grant permission.

On Macs, Gemini already runs as a standalone assistant you can call up on top of other apps. With the upcoming release, it will be able to tap into your existing conversations to draft replies, summarize long threads, extract action items, or set reminders tied to what people are messaging you about. The integration is described as local-first, meaning Gemini doesn’t gain blanket access by default and relies on macOS permissions to reach your chats.

The move comes just a week after Google shipped a Windows version of the Gemini app, underscoring a broader push to make AI agents feel like part of the operating system rather than yet another website. For heavy iMessage users, having an assistant living in their main chat app could be a major convenience boost—but it also raises familiar questions about privacy and data control. How clearly Google exposes permissions and what it processes on-device will likely determine whether people are willing to let AI sit inside their everyday conversations.
