Glean unveils Tau, a desktop hub that fuses local files with its enterprise AI

Enterprise search and AI platform provider Glean has introduced Glean Tau, a new desktop workspace for Windows and macOS that connects the company’s enterprise AI to what actually lives on an employee’s machine — local files, apps and even source code. Announced on August 26 at the Glean:GO conference in San Francisco, Tau is pitched as a single interface where users can search across company knowledge and their own laptop, then ask AI to summarize, draft or automate follow‑up work.

Glean is openly benchmarking Tau against Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, claiming a 5.2x advantage in token cost per query and a 3.6x preference score in internal evaluations, where users rated its answers against competing systems. Under the hood, Tau runs on an open‑source harness that makes it easier to plug into existing tools and development environments, so organizations can extend it beyond vanilla Q&A into custom workflows.

One early adopter, LaunchDarkly’s chief information officer, says Tau helps teams scale AI without sacrificing governance — a key concern for regulated industries that need tight control over data access and audit logs. Because Tau can incorporate task‑specific “agent” flows on top of unified search, it aims to move AI assistants from simple chat windows to a more integrated, desktop‑level work surface, a direction that could resonate with Japanese firms juggling a mix of legacy PCs and modern SaaS tools.
