Xero Doubles Down on AI: New Agentic Features Target Small Businesses and Accountants

Cloud accounting platform Xero used its Xerocon US conference to showcase a broad slate of new AI capabilities aimed at small businesses and accounting firms. At the center of the announcement is JAX, Xero’s “agentic platform” designed to connect end‑to‑end financial workflows—from invoicing and payments to cash‑flow management—through coordinated AI agents rather than isolated features.

One highlight was Auto Bank Reconciliation, which uses machine learning to match bank transactions with accounting records. Xero says the feature has already automatically reconciled more than 100 million transactions and will soon support more complex scenarios such as splitting a single payment into revenue and fees. The company is also leaning heavily into integrations with third‑party AI tools including Anthropic’s Claude, ChatGPT, and Microsoft 365, enabling users to query live Xero data in natural language from within the productivity suites they already use.

On the ecosystem side, Xero reports a surge in custom mini‑apps and automations built on its APIs, with roughly one in five connections now coming from bespoke integrations. To support that trend, the firm plans to release additional tooling so non‑expert builders can describe a desired workflow and have AI generate the app or automation. Framed as turning Xero into the “operating system for the agentic era” of small business, the strategy highlights how accounting software is evolving into a broader automation platform rather than a standalone ledger.
