US health IT provider athenahealth has introduced “Mobile Charge Capture,” a new add‑on for its cloud platform athenaOne that lets clinicians log professional charges on their phones while doing rounds in hospitals, nursing facilities, and other care sites.

In many inpatient settings, physicians still jot notes on paper or rely on memory to enter billing data later, which often leads to delays and missed charges. With Mobile Charge Capture, clinicians can pull up their patient list in the iOS or Android app, record procedures and diagnosis codes on the spot, and submit them immediately. Templates and streamlined forms are designed so a typical visit can be captured in just a few taps, with support for voice dictation in many workflows.

athenahealth has been pitching athenaOne as an “AI‑native” platform, and the company says future updates will use machine learning to suggest likely billing codes based on common care patterns. While the feature is aimed at the US reimbursement system, the underlying concept — real‑time, mobile‑first capture of billing data directly at the bedside — is highly relevant to hospitals and home‑visit services in other countries that struggle with documentation overhead and revenue leakage.
