Bitcoin Briefly Tops $80K as Short Squeeze and ETF Inflows Stir ‘Hot but Healthy’ Debate
On August 27, Bitcoin briefly surged to around $80,808 before easing back to the high-$79,000 range. That move pushed its market capitalization close to $1.6 trillion and helped lift total crypto market value to roughly the high-$2.7 trillion area, underscoring Bitcoin’s role as the market’s dominant “blue chip” asset.
The rally was fueled by a wave of forced liquidations in leveraged futures. Roughly $409 million in crypto derivatives positions were wiped out in a single day, with about $280 million coming from short positions betting on lower prices. As traders scrambled to cover, the market experienced a textbook short squeeze, where rapid buying by bears under pressure accelerates the upswing.
At the same time, spot Bitcoin exchange‑traded funds in the US continued to attract money. Net inflows reached about $314 million on August 25, extending a seven‑day streak and bringing August totals above $3 billion. Ethereum and Solana products also saw steady demand, with Solana ETFs standing out.
Sentiment gauges are flashing caution. A popular Fear & Greed index has climbed into “greed” territory, highlighting rising speculation and the risk of a shake‑out. Regulators remain active in the background as the US Securities and Exchange Commission has forwarded draft rules on crypto custody to the White House’s regulatory review office, keeping policy uncertainty alive even as prices climb.
