Helicon Lands $16.5M to Build AI‑Run Factories for Carbon‑Fiber Drone Parts
Los Angeles–based startup Helicon has secured a $16.5 million seed round to build what it calls autonomous factories for composite parts. The company focuses on components made from carbon fiber and other advanced materials, with an initial emphasis on high‑performance parts for drones used in defense and logistics.
Traditional composite manufacturing is highly manual and craft‑driven, which often means lead times of several months and limited ability to scale production. Helicon integrates sensors, industrial robots and AI models so that parameters like temperature, pressure and layup patterns can be adjusted in real time on the shop floor. The company claims this approach can cut delivery times from “months to weeks” while maintaining aerospace‑grade quality.
The new capital will fund expansion of a pilot facility near Los Angeles, further development of Helicon’s control software and deeper partnerships with aerospace and defense customers. As AI moves from designing parts to making on‑the‑fly decisions in physical factories, Helicon illustrates how generative and predictive models are beginning to reshape heavy industry, not just software.
