Talking big on AI, delivering little: IDC finds a steep gap in corporate readiness
A new benchmark study from research firm IDC highlights a stark reality behind the current AI hype cycle: nearly 60% of organizations surveyed across 20 global markets say their AI strategy is already transforming the business, yet only about 15% have the capabilities to back that claim up. IDC grouped companies into maturity levels, distinguishing those with fragmented or function‑specific AI efforts from a small vanguard that has embedded AI deeply into products, operations and decision‑making. The assessment looked at data foundations, workforce skills, governance structures and how clearly AI projects connect to core business metrics. For most firms, generative AI remains stuck in pilot projects and proofs of concept, with little evidence of redesigned processes or measurable impact on revenue, cost or risk. IDC argues that leadership teams now need to move beyond generic AI roadmaps and ask harder questions: exactly which workflows gain the most from automation or decision support, and how will accountability and risk controls be built in from the start? For Japanese companies, the findings underscore the risk of AI initiatives that look impressive on slides but fail to change how the business actually runs.
