UK Embraces 44-Point Overhaul of AI Rules in Healthcare

The UK government has formally accepted all 44 recommendations from its National AI Commission on how to regulate artificial intelligence in healthcare, and has published a roadmap for putting them into practice. The expert body, set up under the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), spent the past year examining how to assess, approve and monitor systems such as diagnostic support tools and medical imaging AI.

In a policy paper released on 6 October, ministers commit to clarifying risk categories for AI‑enabled medical devices, using real‑world clinical data for ongoing post‑market surveillance, and giving patients and the public a stronger voice in AI governance. The plan also aims to streamline overlaps and gaps between existing medical‑device rules and new AI‑specific requirements, so that smaller health‑tech firms can comply without being buried in red tape.

By backing the recommendations in full and setting out concrete delivery milestones, the UK is positioning itself as an early mover on practical AI regulation in a highly sensitive domain. While other countries are still debating principles, London is edging toward operational rules that could shape how global manufacturers and startups design and deploy medical AI — including Japanese players eyeing the UK and European markets.
