Quintessent raises $40M to ship comb lasers tailored for AI data centers
Optical‑interconnect startup Quintessent has secured a $40 million Series A round to ramp production of its specialized lasers for AI data‑center networks. The company is developing a “comb laser” chip that can generate many stable wavelengths of light at once, allowing far more data to be pushed through each fiber link that connects AI accelerators inside large clusters.
The round was led by Cycle Capital with participation from Goldman Sachs, Susquehanna International Group, Osage University Partners and others, following an $11.4 million seed round in 2024. Quintessent says the new capital will fund manufacturing scale‑up and the first customer sampling of its product line targeting hyperscale AI operators.
In AI superclusters, performance increasingly depends on how fast GPUs can talk to each other, not just how fast they can compute. Today’s optical modules typically rely on quantum‑well lasers, which are hitting limits in efficiency and durability. Quintessent’s architecture, which uses advanced nanostructures such as quantum dots, aims to cut power consumption while boosting reliability and channel density. The funding underscores how the AI boom is spilling over from software and models into the underlying photonics and networking hardware that make large‑scale training possible.
