Stripe to acquire OpenRouter for over $7B, betting on the AI model gateway layer

Payments giant Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, an AI model gateway platform, in a deal valued at more than $7 billion, according to reporting aggregated by ModelDex. OpenRouter provides a single API that lets developers route requests across models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and a growing list of other providers, effectively acting as a “switchboard” for large language models.

Stripe already leans heavily on machine learning for fraud detection and risk scoring, and it pitches itself as a developer‑first infrastructure company. Bringing OpenRouter in‑house could let Stripe blend transaction data and generative AI into new products, while giving its merchant customers a way to dynamically pick the best model for each task without rewriting code.

The acquisition also raises strategic questions. If one company controls a major access point to frontier models, it gains leverage over pricing, data routing, and potentially which models get visibility. As AI shifts into a multi‑model, multi‑provider reality, owning the gateway layer may prove as important as running the models themselves — and Stripe’s move signals that this layer is now worth big‑tech money.
