ChatGPT to Start Showing Ads in Europe as OpenAI Tests a New Business Model
According to recent European press reports, OpenAI is preparing to roll out advertising inside ChatGPT for the first time in several European countries over the coming weeks. The experiment would show ads to a subset of free-tier users, while keeping the paid premium versions ad‑free, effectively blending a subscription model with an ad‑supported tier.
Until now, OpenAI has relied mainly on subscriptions and enterprise licensing to fund the heavy computing costs of running large language models. With user numbers still climbing and GPU and cloud expenses surging, the company is under pressure to find additional revenue streams. At the same time, EU regulators are debating strict transparency rules for AI‑generated content and for targeted advertising, raising questions about how far in‑chat promotions will be allowed under upcoming laws.
Reports suggest OpenAI plans to clearly label any promotional content and to avoid using the substance of individual conversations directly for ad targeting. The way European regulators respond could set an important precedent: if the model is approved—or heavily constrained—it will likely shape monetization strategies for other generative AI services and AI‑enhanced search assistants across the region.
