Saudi AI fund Alat snaps up two European labs to expand in chips and robotics
On August 7, 2026, Saudi Arabia–backed investment firm Alat announced plans to acquire two European research and development centers focused on artificial intelligence. Alat is a technology investment vehicle created by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) to back projects in AI, semiconductors, and robotics. The new deals mark a significant escalation of its expansion into Europe.
The targets are a German startup building AI software for industrial robots and a French design house specializing in low‑power edge‑AI chips. In both cases, Alat is effectively conducting “acquihires,” bringing the labs and their engineers fully into its portfolio. The company says the facilities will anchor a joint research network spanning the Middle East and Europe, working on factory‑automation software and energy‑efficient processors for AI workloads.
Saudi Arabia has already poured billions into data centers and high‑end GPUs to support generative‑AI services. By buying overseas R&D hubs in key parts of the AI supply chain—chips and robotics—the kingdom is signaling that it intends to be more than just a customer of foreign technology and instead a long‑term player in the global AI race.
