India launches ‘IndiaAI Compute’ cloud to host domestic models and tighten public‑sector AI governance

India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced on August 8, 2026 that its dedicated AI cloud platform for government, “IndiaAI Compute,” has gone live. The platform is designed as state‑run infrastructure where generative‑AI and machine‑learning models used in public services are hosted inside government‑controlled data centers. It forms a central pillar of the country’s national AI strategy, known as the “IndiaAI Mission.”

IndiaAI Compute will gradually onboard large language models developed by Indian universities and startups, with strong support for local languages. Initial services will focus on English and Hindi chatbots and text‑summarization tools, aimed at applications such as tax administration, welfare benefits, and legal case search for courts and ministries.

Alongside the launch, the government released draft AI guidelines for the public sector. They would require agencies to document training datasets and keep humans in the decision loop whenever AI is used in high‑impact processes. By relying less on foreign commercial clouds and keeping sensitive data within its own infrastructure, India is signaling a distinctly “sovereign” approach to scaling up AI in government.
