UK startup Agon raises $30M to build AI‑powered virtual battlefields for drone defence

UK‑based startup Agon has raised a combined $30 million in pre‑seed and seed funding to develop an AI‑driven “virtual battlefield” for drone defence. The round was led by European venture firms including Lakestar and Lux Capital, underlining growing investor interest in military and dual‑use applications of artificial intelligence.

Agon’s platform aims to let defence ministries and private contractors run large‑scale simulations of conflicts between unmanned drones and air‑defence systems. By combining generative models with reinforcement learning, the software can automatically generate thousands of attack and defence scenarios over realistic terrain and sensor networks, then evaluate which tactics perform best. In theory, this should make it possible to iterate on doctrine and hardware designs far more quickly and cheaply than through live‑fire exercises alone.

But the same features that make the technology attractive also raise thorny questions. As AI becomes more central to military planning, concerns about arms‑race dynamics, export controls and the risk of escalating autonomous warfare are intensifying. How Agon chooses its customers, and how governments decide to regulate AI‑enabled war‑gaming tools, will be closely watched in the months ahead.
