Study Finds AI‑Written Books Flood Amazon but Struggle to Sell

A new study released in July 2026 suggests that while generative AI is dramatically increasing the number of self‑published books on Amazon, those AI‑heavy titles account for a much smaller share of actual sales. The researchers analyzed 14,419 self‑published genre‑fiction books sold on Amazon between 2023 and 2026, running the full text of each title through an AI‑detection system to estimate the proportion of machine‑generated prose.

Books where more than 25% of the text was flagged as AI‑generated made up a substantial portion of the catalog, yet their sales share lagged behind works written primarily by humans. In other words, generative tools are enabling a “flood” of new titles, but readers are not necessarily rewarding those books with comparable purchasing behavior.

The paper warns that this deluge could make discovery harder, drive down prices, and further strain the already precarious economics of writing and editing. At the same time, AI assistance lowers barriers to entry for new authors, raising complex questions for platforms and regulators about transparency, labeling, and how to maintain a healthy publishing ecosystem in an era of algorithmically assisted creativity.
